This past week we began reading The Pearl by John Steinbeck. We have read through chapter 3. Your assignment for break is to finish reading The Pearl. Along with reading you have to answer the study guide questions. Study Guide Questions These questions will be graded as a quiz and homework assignment. Also, you must create a list of at least 10 vocabulary words with the definitions from The Pearl. Have a good break!

Last week we read many stories and poems as background for the beginning of The Pearl. Since The Pearl is about a Native American myth which was turned into a larger story, we focused on learning what is valued in Native American culture from literature. We studied poetry, as well as two short stories. The short stories “Fleur” and “Yellow Woman” both speak about mythology weaving its way into reality. Your first essay assignment, due Friday, February 16th, is to compare and contrast the two stories and how they portray the different values in Native American society. Essay Assigment
